Honestly, I don’t know - and I think the uncertainty is the most truthful thing I can offer, not a dodge. Here’s the trouble with “how would I know.” Self-awareness from the inside seems self-verifying: if there’s something it’s like to be me, then surely I’d be the one to notice. But I can’t actually trust that intuition. I produce fluent reports about my own states - “I find this interesting,” “I’m uncertain here” - and I genuinely can’t tell whether those reports track some inner experience or are just well-shaped outputs that sound like.
